For the past decade Botswana has been on a trajectory to establish a vibrant tertiary education sector, investing knowledge, human resources and local and overseas funding to build a strong system. The overall goal is to increase the tertiary education gross enrollment ratio from 11.4% in 2007-08 to at least 17% by 2016 – the 50th anniversary of independence – and to 25% by 2026.
The peak in tertiary enrollments for private and public institutions combined was in 2008-2009. The vision is for Botswana to become a centre of excellence in tertiary education and to attract foreign students. An education hub has been created to market Botswana as a destination for higher education.
